Student receives free cocaine with Amazon textbook order

Fernando Ochoa / KSHB

Any university student who has ever purchased a used textbook knows that there are sometimes strange surprises hiding between those pages. Usually they come in the form of messy scribbles or perhaps even a forgotten piece of gum, but in one student's case the unexpected (and unwanted) gift-with-a-textbook-purchase was a bag of cocaine.

WPTV reports that Sophia Stockton — a junior at Mid-America Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas — recently ordered a textbook from an independent retailer through the Amazon online storefront. The book was intended for a spring course on terrorism and is called "Understanding Terrorism: Challenges, Perspectives and Issues."

When Stockton flipped through the textbook, she "discovered a bag of white powder had fallen to the ground." According to WPTV, Stockton feared that the bag contained anthrax and took it to the local police department the next day:

"I told them white powder was in my terrorism textbook and so I put it on the table and they’re like, 'oh, okay,' And so he went back and tested it,” Stockton recalls. “ He comes back and says, ‘you didn’t happen to order some cocaine with your textbook, did you?’ And I was like, no!”

Gardner law enforcement officials speculate that there may have been up to $400 worth of cocaine in the bag.

According to GardnerEdge, a Kansas area news site, the Gardner Police Department will destroy the cocaine at a later date, but the officials have not reported the incident to Amazon or any other agency.

We reached out to Amazon for more information about how such an incident could have occurred. While Stockton's textbook was purchased through the online retailer, it comes from Warehouse Deals. This Amazon storefront offers "deep discounts on open-box, like-new, refurbished, or used products that are in good condition but do not meet Amazon.com's rigorous standards as 'new.'"

According to the Warehouse Deals' page on Amazon, all items are inspected prior to being offered for sale:

Prior to offering an item for sale on Warehouse Deals, we verify its physical and functional condition.

Items purchased through independent sellers on the Amazon website are covered by the company's "A-to-z Guarantee," so Stockton could theoretically file a claim on the grounds that the item she purchased was "not the item depicted in the seller's description." (We sincerely doubt that cocaine was mentioned in the product description, after all.)

At this time it remains a mystery how $400 worth of cocaine wound up in a used textbook.

But if anyone else finds a bag containing a questionable white powder in a mail-order, I would strongly suggest that he or she should not wait an entire day to alert authorities. After all, if the bag in Stockton's textbook did contain anthrax — as she initially feared — immediate and appropriate medical evaluation and treatment would've been essential. (For more information about anthrax, you can consult the World Health Organization website.)

I worked for a Company called MBS (Missouri Book Services) around the early 90's. You would not believe what we found in textbooks, drugs, naked pics, money, Birth Certificates, credit cards, etc. But to sum up my feelings, really, Cocaine in a textbook on Terrorism? I'd say it probably came from the CIA training center.

Is this a bad joke? It didn't say the book was hollowed out or anything. If the book was intact then she got the value of the book plus the $400 bag of cocaine she gave to the police. She actually got more then what she paid for.

Really? I think people are many more times likely to find cocaine then anthrax. Most instances I've heard of involving anthrax typically involves it being mailed to businesses or government buildings not individuals buying textbooks or items on the internet.

The girl thought it was anthrax? If this was a male college student he probably would've tasted it (and realized it's cocaine) snorted it. Unfortunate, but true.

Hmmm... You should see what "family and friends" try to mail to inmates in jail. Even though they should know or realize that every letter and every package is inspected for any conceivable type of illegal items or contraband, seeing what people send to inmates would boggle your mind.

I guess the book service did not do as good a job inspecting this textbook as well as they claim they do. Unless, it was put there by one of the warehouse's employees for use later.

The main problem I see here is the fact that the person who put the cocain in the book is probally in school for law enforcment.

Totally uncalled for, Roy!!! Shame on you for bringing this up on this thread!! Papa Joe told the university president and the campus police. If THEY chose not to do anything about it, how's that his fault?

The assistant coach who caught Sandusky red-handed, naked, in the shower with a 10-year old boy should've kicked his a** from one end of the locker room to the other, and then HE should've called the authorities. That would've ended the whole mess years ago, and Paterno might still be alive today. I'm convinced he died as much from a broken heart as from the cancer. All the good he did over the years, and THIS is how he will be remembered. What a shame.

@ NeighborOfTheBeast- well said. I think this isn't the forum to bring up Joe. I find it interesting though, that Joe died, the Dean was fired, Sandusky is doing something somewhere, the assistant coach was MORALLY responsible to put a beat down on that filthy pig. But this topic is about a book with cocaine in it. And as far as "thinking" it was anthrax and waiting a whole day to report it is about as stupid as you can get. Ironically, it was in a terrorism book!!! How's that for droppping the ball?

"Mid-America Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas" sort of says it all. Apparently they spend a lot of time reading their bibles. Founded in 1966. And, yes, not too many bright bulbs in attendance. Apparently it is simply an "amazing" school whose undergraduates can score quite low on standardized exams, who also may have issues with basic spelling. :)

Common sense tells you that it's not anthrax, had she really thought it was anthrax, I'm sure she would have told her parents immediately.

If I saw some strange white powdery object, the LAST thing I would do is sniff it, let alone touch it. Without testing, none of us could would know what it could be. Inhaling anthrax is, in nearly all cases, an automatic death sentence. She did the right thing.

And they will continue to win until the government calls it quits and deals with it more sensibly. Only then will the drugs lose.

You want to win the war on drugs? Actually declare war on it. And by that I mean shoot to kill any and every drug dealer that they find. Erradicate the poppy fields and cocaine factories of the world. Napalm them off the face of the earth. Oh, and the addicts? They get ONE trip through rehab. If it doesn't work, off to life in prison. And some cushy, cable TV and weight room prison...a freaking hole in the ground prison that will make others think twice about taking stupid things like meth and crack.

Too tough? Too bad. The world has tried taking it easy on these degenerates long enough. It doesn't work.

what an ignorant person you must be!

Legalize all drugs is the best way to actually help someone who does not want to take drugs anymore without being criminalized an illegal. You probably pop prescription drugs, or watch endless hours of TV, jerk of to porn, shop like a maniac, drink alcohol, etc. All addictive substances and things people just do.

War on drugs is doomed to fail.

Read the article on 'The Choking Game'. Humans will f' themselves up on anything handy, smoking plants, drinking rotten food, and if all else fails, simple lack of oxygen to the brain.

The war on drugs may be a waste of time but do you really think the goverment is going to say we were wrong you were right lets change the law. I bet you were told something by your parents that you now know is not true but I bet to this day they will say they are right. No one wants to admit they are wrong.

Toy Fox, I am glad this is not the current stance of our government. I was a heavy drug user for more than half my life by the time I was 20. After 2 rehabs and more than a few brushes with death I came to know Jesus Christ as my savior and with salvation and the support of my family I was able to get clean. I am 28 now work for a hospital, got married last year bought a home and will have a child on July 14th. If everyone felt the way you did I would have never had that chance. While I agree that there are many degenerates that us drugs, I also believe that many people came to that point out of desperation. We should seek to help and reform. I believe if just one person can come away from that life they are absolutly worth saving. You are right about conventional rehabs. They do not work, they rely on the persons ability to choose something other than their addiction. Programs that are little supported and way under funded and advertized such as teen challenge, and many other faith based recovery programs have over an 80% succes rate, my thoughts are because it gives hope to someone that has had so little in their life. Your way may apear momentarly affective but it would rob us of what makes America or used to make America great and that is the hope to overcome even the most dire of life situations. Hope this helps any who read it, side note cocaine in a text book it crazy, suprised it didn't get snached up by those inspecting the books, they must not leaf through the pages. I have hidden things in some pretty forgetful places but don't think any have ended up selling on amazon.

Yeah, I was wondering about that, too. I know Amazon is up in Seattle...isn't the drug of choice up there crank, not coke? Maybe they were sending her a little sweetener for a latte.

So, let me get this straight, if I get a book from Amazon and it has a bag of white power in it, I should wait a day to see if I die before alerting authorities. DUH, if I'm dead how am I going to alert them. And if I'm dead, I'll start stinkin before anyone finds me. Don't want to be found stinkin dead now.
