Survey: 62% of Americans watch over 3 hours of TV daily

Sony

The next time you feel guilty about wasting half an hour on watching a sitcom, consider this: 62 percent of Americans spend more than three hours glued to their television sets each day.

Sony Electronics shared this statistic after commissioning research firm Harris Interactive to survey more than 2,500 U.S.-based adults in order to learn more about their television watching habits.

It's worth noting that a study conducted by the media researchers at Nielsen in November 2010 — one year ago — suggested that the average person is watching over five hours of television each day.

Suddenly the new numbers don't seem so bad, huh?

Other details discovered during the Harris Interactive survey — which was conducted online in November 2011 — are that 32 percent of Americans are unhappy with their televisions' sizes and that 31 percent are embarrassed by the age of their TV sets.

No word on how many hours are spent idly flipping through channels and proclaiming that "there's nothing good on!"

Now that I think about it, That's more than I watched in over a year. I have a TV but nothing connected to it except my Xbox/PS3 and both through wireless. Does streaming count? I may not get current content but I still may watch a show or two in a few months!

:P

I'm not one of'em. There's nothing on during the weekdays. I watch about maybe an hour a day on week nights. the weekend on the other hand, I watch roughly 5 hours all together.

Why is it crazy, Suethenana? If the television program selections are news and educational programming it can be time very well spent. I watch more than three hours per day, but I don't watch reality programs or cartoons at all, and very seldom watch a sitcom. I really don't see the problem.

I work from home and I watch tv much of the day while I'm doing data entry, spreadsheets or typing. So, I absolutely watch more than 3 hours of tv a day. I DVR all of my nighttime shows that I like, and watch them throughout the day while I work. Then at 4pm when my daughter gets home from school, the tv goes off.

If I didn't work at home, though, I probably wouldn't watch very much tv at all.

How old does your tv have to be for you to be embarrassed that it's too old?? We've had ours since 2006 and as i have yet to feel like it's "too old."
