UCLA student's 'Asians' rant ignites YouTube responses

Jimmy Wong's "Asians in the Library Song"

Jimmy Wong, a lot of people ching chong you.

(It means they love you.)

If you're not laughing, then you haven't seen Wong's YouTube video, "Asians in the Library Song," one of many video responses to UCLA student Alexandra Wallace's rant about Asians in the library talking on their cellphones, checking on their relatives after the "tsunami thing." While the original video has been taken down, copies are still climbing in page views, with one rising above 4.5 million — but skewing overwhelming on the "dislike" scale. Watch Wong's humorous take on the situation and hopefully, you'll be laughing with us:

When poli-sci student Wallace posted her video, she probably had no idea it would create its own tsunami of responses from Asians and Asian Americans across the country, as well as people of all ethnicities and races. They unleashed a torrent of video responses, some vlogs, some angry, some funny, some poignant and some showing musical brilliance (as in the case of Wong’s catchy song).

A personal poem in the voice of Alexandra Wallace

Wallace, whose video went viral the first weekend after disaster crippled Japan, used up her three minutes of fame lambasting Asians whose families visited them to help cook and clean, while pointing out her own American manners and the indignation of being interrupted as she was about to have an "epiphany" during her finals cramming.

It didn't take long for responses to stream in, many of them labeling her as "the racist UCLA student." Twitter and Facebook lit up with many angry anti-Wallace messages — and to a lesser degree, disappointed — including some heavy discussion on group boards, such as the Asian American Journalists Association's MediaWatch. (Full disclosure: I'm national secretary of the organization.) But it was on YouTube, where the controversy began, that really took it to another level.

NMA video depicting Alexandra Wallace events

On Know Your Meme, this "Asians in the Library" page gives a timeline of the events, and includes several video responses, including the Wong song.

"Initially I was pretty outraged," said Wong, in an interview last night. "When I first saw it [Wallace's video], I kind of knew what was coming. I’ve dealt with this sort of stereotype before. She wasn’t going to hold back. At the same time I was extremely frustrated, anger bubbling up in me, I still saw the entire thing as humorous. It almost felt like an SNL skit. Andy Samberg in a blonde wig doing that same monologue would have hit perfectly."

Wong, 23, is a classically trained musician and a Seattle native who moved to Los Angeles a year ago to pursue an acting career. He recently landed a part in a Paul Giamatti movie, "John Dies at the End" (currently filming), and has enough work to commit proceeds from all his songs on iTunes to Japan relief efforts.

Since its debut on YouTube Tuesday — after an all-nighter session of writing, recording and editing — Wong's music video soared to almost 1 million views and this "very single" guy says he's already received 18 marriage proposals over Twitter. (We can't blame you, ladies.)

Wong's older filmmaker brother, Freddie, is a big draw on YouTube with his action videos, such as "Future First Person Shooter," which has had nearly 13 million views. Jimmy Wong wants to create his own YouTube fanbase, and had a good start with his a capella version of the Super Mario Brothers theme song, which came out before the "Asians in the Library" video and gained a respectable number of views: almost 183,000.

Now, a recent report in the Sacramento Bee suggests that Wallace might either have done the rant intentionally to drum up YouTube interest or is trying to capitalize on its surge, trying to follow in the money-laden footprints of YouTube stars, such as Ryan Higa, who raised $600 for Japan with "Honk if you love Japan" signs.

"You can become famous on the Internet, and like reality stars, you have to stir up controversy. When you put something on the Internet, there's a good chance no one will ever see it. But there is always that chance it'll go viral and go to proportions completely unimaginable," Wong said. "She had no idea she was jumping into an ocean of sharks instead of a kiddie pool."

He's glad he took a step back before putting his response out there. He realized he wasn't as angry as he thought he was. He is, however, more angry about those who said the Japan disaster was "payback" for Pearl Harbor

"She wasn’t threatening to hurt anybody ... but she came off as extremely racist in voicing her opinion. She also bookended her entire rant with her American manners her mother taught her: I’m a really nice person, don’t take this offensively. But you’re doing exactly that. You’re going to be rude and offensive. I saw it in a much better light, this is hilarious. Something positive can be done about this. Maybe she misunderstands us, the way we might have misunderstood her."

The song came easily enough.

"Alexandra Wallace wrote the lyrics for me. She gave me all the material I needed," he said. He also drew inspiration from The Flight of the Conchords' Jermaine, whose character he channeled for parts of the song. (You'll know which parts, trust me.)

Because of his approach to a volatile situation, Wong has received a lot of kudos. He's also handling his burgeoning fame with maturity and modesty.

"It's very eye opening, in a good way. With the right message, people will jump on board. People react that way if it’s based on negativity, so if it has an altruistic feel, you're more likely to get people on board and make a difference," he said. "I’m really glad it came out the way it did. It’s not what people expected. So many came at it like, you are this terrible woman, with death threats, and that harkens back to boiling ourselves down to our animal instincts. Then, we’re no better than what Alexandra did."

Well, she asked for it. All college kids talk on the phone a lot. SHE is probably one of those that talks, texts (which kills) while driving, so she should not be critical of anyone.

Anyone who uses a cell phone in the library is rude and ignorant, the latter meaning uninformed of society and library rules. Don't think it's limited to Asians, as I have seen all colors, types and creeps do it wth great pride, entitlement, and no sense of contrition. She should simply have asked the librarian to put a stop to it. Instead, she over-reacted, got silly and made a fool of herself. Alot of folks are doing the same -- some of them on YouTube and some of them right here on these pages!

If I were 40 years younger, I'd be stalking her! She's a hotty and alotta guys' dream-- blonde, stacked and dumb. Nonetheless, I hate it when someone uses a cellphone in a library, on a bus, in a restaurant. There should be laws! Duh--guess what, there are. Signs that say "Please Turn off Cellphones." or "No cell phones please." You'd think a guy in a library could read.

American families are usually very good in understanding other cultures. They're outgoing and very open-minded. They take vacations overseas with their kids and expose them to other cultures and also show them that the world is big and full of opportunities. They teach them to be greatful and work hard and be honest in their dealings with others. Alexandra Wallace, i suspect, isn't privileged to have that kind of upgrading which is OK. It's not the end of the world. We all make mistakes and learn as we grow older and wiser. I think the Asian community needs to forgive her and just move on. PERIOD.

I think you are a little confused about American attitudes toward other cultures. There is a reason we are often referred to as 'Ugly Americans.' This girl was/is dumb and will fade away like all things viral. (William Hung, dancing Ali McBeal baby, Quizno's Sponge Monkeys)

It is my understanding that she is from a privileged background. She's from Fair Oaks. Daddy is a developer. She attends an expensive University (obviously not on scholarship.)

And I have observed a very different America than you describe. She is the perfect stereotype of the ugly American... ethnocentric and vapid. I love my country, but we have room for improvement in this regard.

I'm not from a privileged back ground and haven't had the kind of "upgrading" where I got to travel around the world and learn about other countries, but I do know better than to put down an entire ethnicity, because my parents taught me right from wrong and if she doesn't know it by now, I don't think she's going to grow older and wiser to know it.

American (fill-in-the-blank) are usually very good in...

This typical response shows the hubris at the heart of the ugly American: the self congratulatory preface, the call to the mythic "can do" spirit and in American ingenuity, all phrases rooted exceptionalist BS with little traction in reality and ZERO currency outside the US.

AlKhidr, although I understand your logic in making yoru statement, I recently recalled a time I was an exchange student in Australia at Murdoch University. (Ironically it happened again at the Uni of Melbourne 4 years later when in grad school there).

In doing group work with Aussie and various Asian students in a humanities/technology course and in a land development course later on, I would always hold back and not lead the group since my accent would quickly reveal I was an American.

Strangely, when I did speak, and it was deducted I wasn't Aussie, people would (seemingly) go out of their way to askt pertinent questions but look at me, or direct them at me, -- not at the overall group mixture of Aussies, Kiwis, Singaporeans, Koreans and Europeans.

In both group projects, no one would step up and do the work. This after few wouls offer any ideas. Rather than say anything it was if some would wollow in their own negative self-image and not even say a peep during discussion times when it was absolutely silent and the floor remained open.

When deadlines loomed, who was it that stood up and finally tried to pull everyone's ideas together? Yes, me, the American. There were plenty of other articualte men and women in the group...but no one could or would offer anything. Apparently the ideas of "brainstorming" and "teamwork" were foreign to all but North Americans...

In the end, the techonological report and presentation was made, albeit with a bit of an American slant on TV programming, as NO ONE else offered information, even though ears were certainly open to listen. And yes, it was the American that ended up with the oral presentation, even when others said they understood and agreed with the report.

And, at the Univ of Melbourne about land use development, there was this one bullying, nasty Aussie woman who was domineering. I told her at one point to allow others in the group to sahre ideas, to which I got an evil idea and a target on my back. In the end, after all the self-proclaimed wonder and intelligence of the Aussie woman, and her behind-the-back stabbing and conniving (and whining that only she did work), the loser didn't even have to balls to present our work (which I say was good) to the class and a visiting panel of landowners to which our recommendations were to be applied.

Who was the only one in the group that wasn't a pussy about presenting? The American...

There are quality people and minds in all nations, but damn it, a person who can't communicate or effect change is WORTHLESS.

Therein lies the way in which ANYONE brought up in the US, is at an advantage at anything. Clearly the other message is that bullying women exist in all cultures. And no one stands up to them in their formative years in the age range of 12 to 15 to put the girl bully in her place to end the vicious life and power she yearns later in life, destroying all those in her way.

@Ethioboy -- you are being very tolerant and deserve credit for that. There is a difference though between Americans traveling and exposing their children to other cultures overseas, and how Americans expect those from different cultures to fit into the American way of life on our own shores. Some communities are better than others at doing that but across the board, I think we have a ways to go. I hesitate to tar Ms. Wallace's entire community with the same brush, but in my experience the more well-to-do communities often have the most progress to make in accepting other cultures.

In any event, Ms. Wallace certainly needs to learn some more tolerance and acceptance. And if, as one article suggests, she did this just to stir up some controversy and promote her own blog/vlog, it's a good thing she's majoring in PolySci as she's got a lot to learn about truly effective marketing. And kudos to Mr. Wong for his response to an ignorant, if not self-serving, rant from Ms. Wallace -- well done!

Unfortunately, many Americans, wealthy and otherwise think as she does and have no desire to change. Manyother cultures have been much more enduring than the US. China, e.g. is ancient and is still vigorous; Japan; some African nations. They also have made names for themselves in many areas. The first known university was in Timbuctu; Egyptian architecture still puzzles to this day; the Great Wall of China is the one structure on earth that is easily discernable from space.

But arrogance and ignorance provide the climate for racial and ethnic discrimination and it pays to watch wealthy bimbos. They have the power to sign death warrants as easily as they sign a laundry bill.

Lizzie, it's probably best you not assume that I assume Ethioboy to be American or that I have some disconnect with reality (whatever that rude remark was supposed to mean), but since I have heard this kind of praise often enough from my fellow Americans while traveling, I felt it worth stating. And Bumblebee, I have lived abroad enough in several countries to know that Americans did not invent teamwork. My Asian students have a firm grasp of it, and learn it far earlier, than the American students I taught in middle school in the US.

Being from a minority group myself, and having lived in other countries for a considerable number of years, I can say very confidently that I'm in a good position to judge whether Americans are more or less open-minded than people from other countries. Also, having studied in two private universities (both of which a bit more expensive than UCLA), I can safely say that I have been exposed to that white, "privileged" American that is being accused of fitting the Ugly American stereotype. All I can say from my experience is that Americans are, overall, some of the most diversity-friendly and open-minded people on the planet. I'm not saying there is not ground for improvement--there is, very much so--but compared to people from most other countries Americans are not as bad as one may be lead to think by stupid stereotypes. It is understandable that we see our immigration problems as a sign that we are not as perfectly multicultural as we might be (which is true), but compared to most other industrialized nations, diversity here is much more embedded to our national culture than it is to theirs. Don't fool yourself into thinking that people of color are any more accepted in Norway, Germany, Japan, Sweden, or even Spain than they are here. I have several reasons to say that. From what I've seen and lived, most other countries have either not been sufficiently exposed to multiculturalism to embrace it, or proven to be less welcoming to it the US. But even if we leave comparisons with other countries aside, I don't see why anyone would think that the typical American is hostile to people from other cultures. I would even dare to say that, in many cases, some people belonging to minority groups are more wary of "mainstream" Americans than "mainstream" Americans are of them. And I cannot possibly find a reason to think that it is related to class in any way. I have been to the most homogeneously white towns anyone could imagine in Alabama and everyone was extremely friendly to me and my family, despite how obvious it was that I was not one of them (I'm rather pale-skinned, but I am black-haired and have a tiny bit of an accent). Likewise, I NEVER felt like ANYONE in either one of my universities treated me differently because I was a foreigner. Most of my neighbors and classmates and all of my roommates (who all happened to be white and came, for the most part, from very well-off families) were extraordinarily friendly to me. Trust me, I wouldn't be vouching for them if I didn't feel like, in general, they have treated me better than people from my own country have.

Now, I'm not saying that everyone's experience in America has been like mine, but from what I've seen throughout a lifetime of interactions with people from all walks of life is that Americans are no more deserving of unfair stereotypes than anyone else, and that, to the contrary, their friendliness, hospitality, and open-mindedness is vastly underrated. For the most part (the OVERWHELMING majority of situations), how they treat you will exclusively depend on how you treat them, and not where you come from.

Despite everything, we are one world. One people. What affects one affects all others in some way or another. In a time of tragedy, as with Japan, as with Haiti, and countless others, there isn't room for pettiness, short-sightedness and ignorance. There is only room for compassion, empathy and engagement. Put all else aside. The song was brilliant.

      #4.13 - Sat Mar 19, 2011 8:39 PM EDT

As I suspect is true of many countries America has individuals that fall all across the spectrum when it comes to attitudes towards people different than themselves. I also suspect that in general Americans are more accepting and generous in this regard than people from anywhere else in the world. We have a long history of racial integration and a legacy rich in social justice. Not to mention quite diverse population demographics relative to most countries. Paradoxically, we also have a minority of vicious racists with very xenophobic attitudes. For those of you not familiar with the US it is important to understand that America is a very large place and regions very sometimes as much as countries in Europe vary. Some people and places in America are indeed living in the stone age but many other places are fully integrated communities of very accepting and heterogeneous people. Stereotyping Americans really is a mistake. This coming from the perspective of a white, male, American married to a black woman from another country and raising children together.

Okay I am an Asian American, grew up in the South and have traveled to many countries AND LET'S BE HONEST!!! I have never met a "culture" or "ethinicity" or "group" out there that doesn't have somebody in its midst who doesn't say racist things about another "culture" or "ethinicity" or "group" FOR GOODNESS SAKES white and black people are called "devils" in Mandarin. I was in China during 9/11 and the things I heard said about white people were amazingly racist and we traveled with a black student as well and BOY the things said there were way worse!!!! In Australia people flamed Asians and in England they couldn't stand the French (as we were just coming from France to England) Need I go on... Let's be real the issue here is what the girl said out in the open and not just in the company of her own kind. If you say it amongst your own "people" then it's not racist, but if you say it out loud,in mixed company, then well you are a bigot! Dismount the high horse of fake outrage, people.

Finally, the most obvious point. This girl's alleged crime is that she judged an entire ethnic group based on experience with a few members of that group. Isn't every person who is calling all Americans "racists" because of the stupid comments of ONE person doing the same thing?

I've always felt different from other Americans, as well as the rest of the world. I don't believe in God. Apparently 80% or so of the world does. To me that makes me think your all crazy, but who am I to argue others belief so I just mind my buisness and hope you don't kill me in a religous riot. I don't believe in ghosts. Apparently 1 in three or so Americans do. To me that makes me think they're all crazy, but that's their buisnes. I just go about hoping they won't kill me saying a ghost told them to. Now, God is an argument of how we got here and ghosts are an argument of where we are going, but, racisism is an argument of where we are now. Nothing is scarier than that. If we can't all agree on where we came from and we don't agree on where we are going, than nobody realy has a manual. So please, shut up already and just get along. You all, humans in general, scare me. please don't kill me.

The video responses are really hysterical - it is nice to see that, instead of boycotting and screaming "outrage", the Asian community has taken a much more creative approach, and turned Wallace's idiotic remarks back on her. Awesome! PS: that first song was great - fantastic singing voice and wonderful production value!

I agree with her way too many asians in California. and vietnamese is the most annoying language ive ever heard in my life. how does that unsophisticated grovel ever amount to any useful syntax or coherant logic is beyond me.

It doesnt make you smart to be so multicultural it makes you a pushover.

Then why don't you and your fellow teabaggers get elected and pass a law deporting all annoying asians and anyone else who doesn't speak slowly enough for you to understand......if you don't like multicuralism, move to North Korea.

Did anyone ask what you think of Vietnamese? Are you a linguist?

To untrained ears, any language sounds unsophisticated.

Oh wait, you already revealed yourself to be just another racist. Of course you hate the languages that come with the the people.

Ship all racist white folk back to their homeland, motherland, fatherland or whatever land they came from. They just aren't part of the American way of life really, they should go back to where their ancestors came from, maybe they will find peace with like minded folk back in their own land. America is for all races, creeds and ways of life, like it or leave our country, we really don't want racist jackasses living within our borders.

Anyway, revoke this girl's status with UCLA, our country doesn't need to be educating people with that kind of mentality, save the money and spot for real Americans. She's just a fake American wannabe. Her parents should be shunned by society for teaching their children to be hateful towards people who are a different from themselves. Its all about the parents, they teach this garb and their children will continue to proliferate this non-sensical way of thinking.

Anyway if this girl or her parents are getting any type of public assistance for the girl's college education, we should demand it cease. We really don't need this kind of non-sense type ideologies in or around American soil. Take that crap elsewhere.

Everything that I saw in the video is trying to direct a sense of using the Internet and being held liable for what you post in that in could effect you in the future.

Typical Chinese business practice of trying to make people think that what they say would have any effect on the future of the person. Still another psychological attack by the Chinese Internet Psychological Warfare agents to force American's to live under their state rules (sound like the current practice of what the Republican's are doing by busting up the Union's?) of being how the Chinese overlords want people to be personality wise.

Down with the Chinese stand with the Japanese. World War II is over with the Japanese are our allies while Communist China is not. Where is all of the Imperialism coming from that the rest of the world complains about?Right there at the door of the Chinese.

I think in public places in this country, everyone should speak in English. At least I always do that even when I talk to other Indians. The UCLA girl is not racist at all. She is justified. It is annoying to be bombarded with weird languages. Why people should have to put up with chinese or hindi?

That makes it none of her business. That language is native to their culture! So they should just give that up because they move somewhere where its not the predominant language? Does ethnocentricity ring a bell for you?

If you speak in another language or any language for that matter, speak so softly that no body can hear you. What happened to the common decency? This is not ghetto in Shanghai or Mumbai. Just because you speak in another language, that does not give you the right to be rude to everyone around you. If that is your culture, then go to the country of that culture.

I agree with ShyamRoy. The girl is justified in her rant.

She is griping about her personal experience with rude people. In every instance of her experience these rude people happen to be Asian. Maybe other races are answering their cell phones in the library but they are whispering and hurrying to step outside, thus not disrupting her studies or anyone else's, so they go unnoticed. Whereas, she is noticing that people that do not attempt to make an effort to step outside but decide to continue their conversations in normal voice tones have all been Asian.

Most people tend to like to have private conversations and will naturally go away from people so that everybody doesn't know their business. It could be that because the person on the phone is speaking a language that they don't think anyone near them understands, that person feels more comfortable carrying on the conversation in front of others, not realizing just how rude they are being. Regardless of language, people shouldn't go into public places that are known to be quiet zones and start chatting on cell phones.

Now, on to him: Cute, obviously wonderful sense of humor, amazing voice....oh, to be 40 years younger!

Seriously, he has probably....and I hope I'm correct....inadvertently launched a long and successful career. He certainly deserves one!

As for the contingent who feel that english is the only acceptable language....my personal feeling is that if you live and work in a country, you should become reasonably conversant in that country's language. If "the family back where we came from" speaks something else, I have no issue with you speaking to them in the language with which they are more comfortable. The big reason people give for this kind of disdain is that they feel that they are being described in an unflattering manner in the language they do not speak. In her case, that may be correct.

I love this song as a reaction to a young girl's comments who appears to be intolerable of people who are different than her. What a great sense of humor the singer/songwriter has! What a wonderful way to respond to ignorance...just laugh! :)

I never watched the video. Might get around to it, but can't see why I'd bother. . . BUT, if Wallace was ranting about people of ANY ethnic origin talking on their damn cell phones, in the library no less, then I agree with her 100% on at least that part of her rant!

It must be hard enough to go through life as a foreign student without having to deal with the attitude that this young girl displayed. It is an unwillingness to show compassion that leads disturbed folks, like the kid from Virginia Tech, to go off the deep end. It's a big world out there Ms. Wallace with lots of different people and cultures, try learning that while you are in school.

Loved the video/song from Jimmy Wong. That's going to be a hit!

that Wallace girl is one ugly American - a disaster of this magnitude and all she can think about is her own freakin' "space", truly unbelievable, but that's America today, sad to say. She IS the epiphany, all superficial skin-deep values and she exemplifies the decline of America surely to come in the not-too-distant future IF this trend continues. I'm not hopeful. STUPID Rules today in America, nothing deep, all style, no substance, no intelligence, no depth, zero values. Welcome to Sarah Palin's world.
